Having a Smoke on a Roof Top

Hello everyone its been a while since my last report of what I have been doing as a corporate photographer for Alternative Images.

It seems that I had so much to do with other projects recently that to find the time to sit and write a catch up piece for the blog had to take a back seat for a while.
So I’m back and have a few interesting items to share with you. Hope that you find enjoyable.

Back in May I was asked to do a small project for Simon from Delta Ventilation, who owns a company that deals with new builds where fire and smoke is an issue.
The company installs and maintains a smoke extraction system that is designed to remove smoke from a building when is on fire so any people who are escaping from a scene are helped so the smoke does not indanger their lives. Many lives are lost more from the smoke inhelation than the flames or heat itself.

Here we set up a controlled situation and notified the near by emergency services that we were going to re intact a fire event. The corridors of the eighth floor were flooded with artificial smoke, this looked pretty realistic to me, and we set up camera equipment on the roof top of the eleven story building know as Victoria Halls in Kings Cross that has been built for accommodation for students for the nearby university and colleges, though the rent is designed for the more wealthy student while studying in London.

I was shooting video using two Nikon D810 DSLR cameras to make a sequence piece that was going to be used at an exhibition for Delta at the Excel centre later in June. The large powerful fans of the system started up and the auto process was underway. Within no time at all the extraction funnels were blowing the large volume of smoke away from the corridor of the eighth floor into the skies above and we had our shots we needed for the production.

Later in June I visited the Excel and photographed the exhibition stand for Delta that had the video we made running on a visual display.

Alternative Images Goes Sky High

I am pleased to announce that Alternative Images has joined forces with professional drone pilot Stuart to add to the services offered by the company.

In the past year, as we all know, the use of drones for filming has become more popular. Many production and TV companies use them for filming sequences that in previous years could only be done with a full size and costly aircraft. Drones in the ‘right hands’ can add fantastic effect to large or small projects either for still shoots or video footage.

Video production is on the increase with short introduction interviews to explain what a company does and what it can provide for their customers.
The productions have so much to offer businesses and these are being used on web sites and social media platforms to enhance the viewers experience. So whatever your video project is about, Alternative has the means to add aerial footage as an addition to the main production in either 1080p or 4K resolution.

Why use Alternative?

We have heard in the news a number of incidents where drones have been used by members of the public in very stupid circumstances. This has come about because drones have been advertised and sold freely as ‘great toys’ and the latest must have, not knowing what damage whizzing propellers attached to a lump of travelling plastic can do.

I have over twenty years or so been a member of a model flying club, flying RC helicopters where to be a member of that club you needed to pass tests to prove that you had gained experience of handling such an aircraft. This in turn meant that you were insured and registered with The British Model Flying Association (BMFA).

Cub Member Stuart also an experienced RC pilot with helicopter has flown drones since their arrival and holds the correct Aerial filming CAA Operators licence with insurance. This is the qualification anyone using a craft to fly in certain areas should have and should be enforced. This qualification and our combined flying knowledge and Stuarts years of experience with RC aircraft ensures the best and safest procedure possible.

UKHO with drinks on board HMS Belfast

The UKHO in March held their conference at the Amba Hotel, Marble Arch and had a fully packed programe for the day. The conference morning session was a blast of information including guest speakers with question and answer sessions at specified intervals.
UKHO are a government body who are responsible for the development and operations of the worlds ship navigation systems. The days of paper charts still exist but modern technology has now placed this into a stage further.

The morning sessions broke for lunch and a large group photograph of the whole force of UKHO took place within the conference room on thier return. Although the room was a little small for the amount of people who attended of around one hundred and forty, experienced photographer Peter Austin of Alternative Images did a fantastic job of arranging all on stage where they could be placed. Unfortunately the stage length was a bit smaller than one would have liked for such a large group so the last remaining people who arrived had to stand on the lower carpet area. Not an ideal situation but sometimes trying to achieve something in an area that doesn’t quite suit does have to have a compromise.

The afternoon was made up of interactive sessions within various rooms in groups and then later all gathered for a closing session in the main area. Then we were all informed that the group would be taken to a secret venue for the evening via old London Routemaster buses that ended up a drinks an nibbles event on board HMS Belfast that is moored as a museum on the river thames in London
