Down on the River

It has been a busy time for Alternative Images recently with various proposals for 2014 already being asked for. And Christmas hasn’t even happened. But all companies need to prepare for the next year in advance to gain the next level of achievement to stay ahead of the competition.

I was asked to attend a function for ITL at the Runnymede Hotel on the Thames recently to cover the evening’s activities. The day was a briefing conference with an evening of a lighter feel with amusing video clips that were done by the various countries that attended. Many from mostly Europe so there were many languages apparent within the room.

A good touch by the organising team was the variety of foods on offer for the delegates. There was roast beef and Chinese to a vast selection of Mediterranean food displayed.  After the meal the evening came to a conclusion with a small awards ceremony for the best entertaining video from the teams.

All the images were sorted and supplied swiftly from Alternative to the marketing team of ITL the following day sent via ftp server to be available for the in house news publication.

UKHO at the Park Plaza London

I was delighted to be asked again by the production company who organises UKHO conferences to attend again at the designated London venue. The company are holding three conferences in locations such as Singapore, Florida and London. UKHO call these their distributor’s conferences and address the various teams around the globe. The London venue this year was the Park Plaza Hotel on the River and set the scene for a day packed full of information and opportunities for the attendees.

My brief during the day was to capture the atmosphere of the room and record the main speakers on stage while addressing the audience. This is one of my favourite situations now where I can use my Nikon flagship camera to the full extent of its ISO capabilities. I shoot without flash and rely on the ambient light conditions to give the feel and ambience of the shots as natural as they can be taken. It does help here being able to shoot at 10000 ISO at a good shutter speed to keep all images sharp.

After lunch the company request that I take a group photograph of all that attended. This can be a demanding situation and using electronic flash sometimes up to three heads at one time and then needing to dismantle and move out of the conference area quickly so they can proceed with the day. In the whole of my career as a corporate photographer in London have I done a large group where someone doesn’t blink or look aside? So in this group shot with the wonders of digital trickery I replaced various heads and even blended the screens in behind to give a full as natural composition as I could as I saw it on the day.

The group photo is presented in a mount and was pre designed with the company colours and logos placed and printed in one image giving it a difference and professional appearance. This was all designed and produced by Alternative Images as part of the services offered to clients to give the x factor to a corporate day.

UKHO Workshop London

Alternative Images, corporate photographers in London were asked to record the workshop event held in London on 11th Septmber by UKHO organised by CT-Live event management. This workshop was explaining the importance of regular updates and best procedure practice for ship navigation systems. At the event there was time to ask the professionals after a light lunch on the systems they offer. The main presenter for the morning was Captain Paul Hailwood who spoke in two one hour sessions on the ECDIS system.

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office is committed to the safe and efficient adoption of ECDIS in accordance with SOLAS requirements. It is apparent the shipping industry requires clear unambiguous guidance for the transition from traditional to digital navigation. The UKHO will be providing a workshop to provide guidance for the development of ECDIS operating procedures into the on board safety management system as required by international regulations and the International Safety Management (ISM) code. The workshop will benefit any person involved with the shipping industry including, managers, owners, ship personnel, regulators and auditors.

Lincoln’s Inn with BSDA

Alternative Images has been commissioned to attend the Gala Dinner for the annual summer assembly for the European Federation of Bottled Water hosted by the UK office BSDA, the British Soft Drinks Association. The venue this year was the historic buildings of Lincoln’s Inn with the famous Great Hall an Old Hall that houses many events during the year. The start of the evening was a guided tour for the guest group around the Old Hall where the guide gave a detailed history account of the years gone by of the famous building. Then the group were taken over to the chappell to explore more facts of British history. They were impressed with the fantastic stained glass windows of the chappell that stood tall at both end of the building. The Chapel was erected in 1623 and, at the end of the seventeenth century, chambers were erected in New Square, which had formerly been an open space contiguous with Lincoln’s Inn Fields.

The exact origins of Lincoln’s Inn, and indeed of the other three Inns of Court, are not fully known. The extant records of Lincoln’s Inn open in 1422, the earliest of any of the Inns of Court; but a society of lawyers by that name was then already in existence.   It is likely that it evolved during the late part of the fourteenth century. In contrast to many of the colleges of Oxford or Cambridge, which it resembles, there was no conscious founding or dated charter.

The weather for June was not at its best for the European group but after the short tour of 45 mins they gathered for a relaxed photograph outside with the Great Hall in the background. There followed a drinks reception held in the Crypt that is beneath the Old Hall for the group accompanied by the sounds of  flute and harp players before they were called for the more formal Gala Dinner situated above within in the Old Hall. The Old Hall is the finest building in the Inn and, indeed, is one of the finest buildings in London. It is small but beautifully proportioned and executed.
